Westlund Excavating has been a trusted name in excavation across western Minnesota for nearly five decades. Founded in 1976 by Richard E. “Dick” Westlund, the company built its reputation on quality work in sewer and water installation—completing township roads, trailer courts, and municipal projects from Moorhead to Walker. Dick's deep knowledge and dedication laid the foundation for the company's ongoing success and is remembered fondly following his passing in May of this year.
In 2009, Steve Westlund continued the legacy with a few pieces of old iron and a passion for the work. Early projects included floodway and ditch excavation for the Buffalo-Red River Watershed District in collaboration with Houston Engineering. By 2011, Westlund Excavating had expanded into aggregate production and now operates its own gravel pit north of Hawley, MN, with additional leased pits in Felton and Rollag.
Today, Westlund Excavating specializes in new construction, underground utility installation, and earthmoving for commercial, industrial, and municipal projects. From cutting-edge stormwater systems like the region’s first MN/ND underground stormwater vault installed for Kwik Trip in Fargo, to multiple underground StormTech systems across the FM area, the team brings modern technology and precision to every job. With GPS-equipped machinery, expert operators, and in-house gravel crushing and screening capabilities, Westlund Excavating continues to deliver top-tier results for clients from Fargo to Grand Forks and throughout Minnesota.
